A junction built into the existing line

On 24 April 2020, a construction crew began laying and connecting switches at Golmudhe signal station on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. The work marked the formal connection of the Golmud–Korla line, known as GeKu, with the existing route. Golmudhe lay southwest of Golmud station and served as the junction point where the new railway could meet the Qinghai–Tibet line.

A route across regional boundaries

GeKu begins in Golmud and runs west through Mangya toward Korla in Xinjiang. When the full line opened in December 2020, Xinhua described it as joining the Qinghai–Tibet Railway and extending the rail network toward southern Xinjiang, Qinghai and Tibet. The junction is a piece of railway geography rather than a single station building: switches, existing track and the new line made a connection possible, while Golmud became the point where these routes met.
