At Ta’er Monastery, butter becomes a temporary sculpture. In the Hehuang valleys, painted clay, embroidery and temple murals hold other kinds of time. Northward, Qinghai Lake is crossed by fish and birds; westward, salt works and telescopes bring two different kinds of work to the Qaidam Basin. Farther south, painters, carvers, herders and river patrols bring the headwaters into view through particular places and tasks. Follow the material, the water or the work: each route opens another Qinghai.

Angsai Guides and Wildlife Patrols Along the Lancang

A 2021 account follows a herder-guide in Angsai and the community’s work with canyon visitors, wildlife knowledge and conservation rules.

Guiding along a river bend

In Angsai Township, Zadoi County, the Lancang River bends through a canyon. A 2021 Xinhua report introduces Baimawenzha, a herder from Niandu Village who became a local guide. He had grown up tending livestock in the same mountains; by 2019, he was receiving small groups through an ecological-experience pilot.

Local hosts attended training on wildlife and outdoor conduct, then welcomed small groups by reservation. They could provide lodging, food and guiding, while visitors agreed to follow conservation rules. Knowledge of the terrain became part of both community work and the visitor program.

Wildlife signs recorded in the field

Guides and ecological patrol teams learned to read marks on the ground. The report describes residents looking for animal footprints and droppings, then recording wildlife locations and movement routes in notebooks. Snow-leopard tracks and droppings help rangers understand how animals use the landscape.

The 2021 account places herding, guiding and wildlife protection in the same Angsai community, along the Lancang River.
