A glacier in Bomi County

Midui Glacier lies in Midui Valley, in Yupu Township, Bomi County. A 2022 report from Tibet Daily follows villager Jiang A Luobu as he helps a visitor onto a horse for the trip to the glacier. The report says village households took part in a horse team and sightseeing-vehicle operations. It places a community beside the ice, where the glacier is part of a working landscape as well as a mountain view.

The photographs add their own dates to this place. One image identifies Midui Glacier in May 2010; another, taken in September 2008, shows autumn color beneath the Kangri Garpo range. They preserve different seasonal views rather than a single timeless picture of the valley.

Ice at the end of a mountain valley

The municipal geography account locates Midui Glacier in the upper valley and classifies it as a compound valley glacier. Connected valley branches channel snow and ice downslope through the surrounding mountain terrain. At the glacier’s lower end, ice, rock debris and meltwater meet the valley floor, so the landscape extends beyond the white surface.

Two photographs record different seasons: autumn color below the Kangri Garpo range in September 2008, and the glacier in May 2010. Together they preserve dated views of Midui Valley across the seasons.

Village work beside the ice

A 2022 report describes how Midui residents organized visits to the glacier. All 58 households took part in the village horse team, whose rides brought visitors toward the ice. The village committee managed the fees and distributed them to residents at year’s end. The report records a shared village activity in that period, connecting household work with the glacier route.

A visitor approaching the ice might meet a horse handler from the nearby village. The valley holds both the glacier and a settlement whose residents organized trips through this mountain landscape.
