St. Augustine’s Church: The Procession and the “Dragon Beard” Name

A local name for St. Augustine’s Church grew from a story about palm-leaf roofing, while its recorded history begins with the 1591 foundation.

A church founded in 1591

Spanish Augustinian friars established St. Augustine’s Church in 1591. The original church was simple, and its palm-leaf roof gave rise to the local name “Dragon Beard” when wind-blown leaves were compared to a dragon’s whiskers. The present church was rebuilt in 1874.

Its place on St. Augustine’s Square connects the church with the nearby theatre, seminary and library. The buildings face the same public space, where religious, educational and cultural life meet within a few streets.

How a roof became a local name

The name “Dragon Beard” is linked to the church’s palm-leaf roof. In local memory, the leaves moved in the wind like a dragon’s whiskers, giving rise to a name later rendered in Cantonese as Long Song.

The church has since been rebuilt in more durable materials, but the neighborhood name preserves the image of its earlier roof. The story joins a small architectural detail to the language of the surrounding streets.

A church in a lived square

St. Augustine’s Square is compact, but its buildings span several kinds of cultural life. The church shares the setting with a theatre, seminary and library, while wave-pattern pavement gives the open space visual texture.

Each year, a two-day procession of the image of the Suffering Christ makes this church a focal point of Macao’s Catholic calendar. The “Dragon Beard” name brings another kind of memory into the ensemble: a neighborhood image of leaves lifting in the wind, preserved in the church’s Chinese name.
