Clay under the hands

At Banma’s black pottery training and experience center, a 2025 reporter watched learners knead clay until smooth and turn a wheel to refine a vessel’s shape. The movement is modest and exact: pressure from the fingers, a turning form, an edge made more even. Rough earth gradually becomes a vessel with a recognizable profile.

The 2025 report describes twelve traditional stages from clay preparation to a finished vessel. At the training center, it records two movements in particular: kneading the clay smooth and turning the wheel to refine a vessel’s shape.

Vessels for changing uses

The report lists pots, lamps, jars and storage vessels among Banma black pottery’s practical forms. It also notes newer designs such as coffee cups, incense burners and vases. The range places the craft between household use and contemporary display: a material tradition carried into objects with different purposes and audiences.

The center was founded in 2014 by Guoluo Xiegetai, whom the report identifies as a provincial-level inheritor from a family of pottery makers. The article records 21 artisans learning and practicing there in 2025. In the training space, inherited skill becomes a shared practice—hands shaping clay, forms gathering on shelves, and familiar materials meeting new uses.
