Where ice meets the Chayu forest

Azha Glacier lies near Azha village in Upper Chayu Town, Chayu County. A county profile describes it as a maritime glacier facing southwest, with a tongue that reaches into forest for several kilometres. That meeting of ice and trees gives the glacier its local image of a “green-sea glacier.” The phrase captures a striking feature of southeastern Tibet: high mountain ice descends into a valley where forest can grow.

The glacier is not simply a white mass on a distant skyline. Its lower edge belongs to the same terrain as the wooded slopes below it, and the contrast between those zones shapes how people picture the place. In Chayu, the forest is part of the glacier’s setting, not a separate backdrop.

A glacier described in three stages

The county profile describes three parts of the glacier: an upper accumulation area above the snowline, a steep middle icefall, and a lower tongue. Read from top to bottom, the sequence follows the mountain’s form. Snow gathers high on the slope; ice moves through a broken, steep section; the tongue extends toward lower ground and forest.

This simple profile offers a way to imagine the glacier’s vertical course without reducing it to a single scenic view. The upper snowfield, fractured icefall and forest-facing tongue are distinct parts of one mountain landscape. The “green-sea” image comes into focus at the bottom, where ice and vegetation occupy adjoining elevations.

A portrait, not yet a climate record

Azha’s defining image is a glacier entering a forested valley. The county’s description places it within the warm, wet mountain environment of southeastern Tibet, where steep changes in elevation bring very different landscapes close together. Ice, rock, water and forest form a sequence down the slope rather than separate worlds.

That geography gives the place its character: the high glacier is visible through its relationship to the wooded valley below. The name “green-sea glacier” brings those two environments together in a few words, making Azha memorable as a meeting point between alpine ice and Chayu’s forests.
