Zhongshan Road
Dating from 1925, Xiamen’s Zhongshan Road runs toward the sea through a commercial landscape associated with qilou arcades. These buildings extend their upper storeys over a pedestrian passage, creating a distinctive overlap between private premises and public movement. Nearby lanes bring other domestic scales into view. The district can be read through thresholds, column lines and changing shop uses as well as decorated façades.
