Why Black-Soil Grassland Restoration Takes Repeated Seeding

A 2025 report explains that short growing seasons and cold conditions make grassland restoration in Guoluo a repeated process, with seed mixes and follow-up care both mattering.

Why one sowing may not be enough

In Guoluo’s high, cold grasslands, restoration works against a short growing season. A 2025 report quotes a Maqin forestry official who says grasses sometimes need repeated sowing to survive. The region’s projects therefore combine seed selection with several rounds of work: turning the soil, sowing, then leveling the ground.

The report names cold-tolerant grasses such as Elymus nutans and Poa crymophila. Seed size also affects the depth at which each kind is sown. Timing, species and placement all shape whether young growth can take hold.

Bare ground after a restoration project

In December 2023, a central environmental inspection found bare patches in Maqin County’s 2022 grassland restoration project. The required checks of next year’s grass cover and fresh-grass yield had not been completed before acceptance. The inspection photographs show open ground inside the project area.

The 2025 forestry report describes repeated sowing, species selection and soil preparation as part of restoration in the same high-altitude region. These dated records place field work alongside follow-up: seeds are sown, then plant cover and survival need to be measured as the next growing season passes.
