Between three countries
A Hulunbuir government account of the reserve places it in the west of the city, north toward Russia and south toward Mongolia, across New Barag Right Banner, New Barag Left Banner and Manzhouli. The reserve is made of Hulun Lake, which the page also calls Dalai Lake, plus the Chinese part of Buir Lake, the Orkhon and Kherlen approaches, marsh and grassland. Hulunbuir's name comes from the two lakes. This page is about the unit drawn around them.
740,000 hectares
The page gives the reserve 740,000 hectares: 325,300 of wetland, about 44 percent, and 408,300 of grassland, about 55 percent, plus a small area of sand. That figure is the protected unit. It is not a measurement of open water. Treating it as the size of the lake would invent a shoreline the document does not draw.
1987, 1992, 2002
The reserve was established in 1987 and promoted to a national reserve in 1992. In 2002 it was placed on the Ramsar list of internationally important wetlands and in the UNESCO biosphere network. The same page also gives counts of protected animals that do not agree with each other, so those numbers are left out. The designations are enough to say what kind of place the lake sits in.
