Xinjiang Tianshan is four separate components, not one continuous park. Bogda is the eastern one, in the south of Fukang City in Changji, on the range east of Ürümqi. Tomur, Kalajun-Kuerdening and Bayanbulak are other components, hundreds of kilometres away. A photograph of Bogda does not stand in for them.

Snow, then a lake
Bogda is the eastern anchor of the Xinjiang Tianshan, and Heaven Lake is how most people come close to it.

The lake is the approach
Heaven Lake is the water most visitors use to meet this snow. The walk, the shore and the peak above it make a clear picture: rock, forest and a basin of meltwater. That picture is a visit. The World Heritage line follows ridges and existing protected land. A ticket gate is not the boundary, and a centroid on the UNESCO map is not a path.
Desert on either side
UNESCO's reason for inscription includes the contrast between these wet highlands and the dry basins beside them. From Bogda the Junggar country lies to the north and the Tarim world, eventually, to the south. The same mountain system feeds very different towns. Later articles follow that water into Turpan's underground canals and into the meadows of Ili, rather than adding more adjectives to one lake.
