Liangping's three wonders are bamboo blinds, New Year prints and lantern opera, and the first of them is a bamboo craft in the strict sense. The blinds were entered in the first batch of the national intangible heritage expanded list. The work begins with a culm, split and split again until the strips are fine enough to be woven into a sheet, which is why a blind can be rolled, carried and hung in a doorway. The district also has a town named Zhushan, Bamboo Mountain. A craft that gives a town its name, and takes a place among a district's three wonders, has been there long enough to shape how the place describes itself.

The name that records a plain
The county was first set up in 553, the second year of Yuanqin of the Western Wei, as Liangshan County, named after Gaoliang Mountain south-east of the town; in 970, the third year of Kaibao of the Northern Song, Liangshan Jun was established to govern it. In 1952 the name collided with Liangshan County in Shandong, and the county was renamed Liangping, after the flat land at the foot of Gaoliang Mountain. The name is therefore a description of the ground: 1,892 square kilometres in the north-east of Chongqing, a plain held between ridges, since the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin has a series of parallel ridges and valleys.
The rest of the inventory
Bamboo is one entry in a longer inventory. Liangping woodblock New Year prints are on the first national intangible heritage list, and so is Liangshan lantern opera; the laizi drumming is on the same first list, and the work-chant of the bearers entered the second. The district calls itself an international wetland city, and its pomelo is counted one of the country's three famous pomelos, with Shatian in Guangxi and Wendan in Fujian. The climate is monsoon-influenced humid subtropical, with short mild winters and long hot summers; the January average is 5.7 degrees, and around 71 percent of the year's rain falls between May and September.
