Eight towns in 1995

The western and eastern halves of Jiulongpo are different country. The Zhongliang Mountains run across the middle of the district; east of them the ground is low hills, generally between 250 and 450 metres and mostly river valleys below 300, while west of them the land falls from the north-west to the south-east between 180 and 400 metres, gentler hills and flat basins, with the Jinyun Mountains along the western border. The 1995 re-division of the city put eight Baxian towns and one township on that western side into Jiulongpo, including Baishi Yi, Hangu, Zouma and Tongguanyi.

Tales and a listed village

Zouma is one of the market towns in that group. It administers eleven units, the first of them the Guanwumiao community, the rest villages with names such as Dengtao, Yulong, Jinma, Jiaoyuan and Leyuan. Two things about it are on the record. The folk tales of Zouma town are listed among the national intangible cultural heritage of China, and Jiaoyuan village was named in 2012 as one of the first group of Chinese Traditional Villages. Neither is a monument; both are the kind of listing a market town on a country road can still earn.
