A market built for more than stalls

Wenshan's border-trade story is not confined to the road leading to a checkpoint. A 2023 Yunnan Department of Commerce report describes a 53.84-mu border-resident market at Tianbao port in Malipo County, with joint-inspection offices, supervised storage, inspection areas, fruit storage and a chilled-seafood warehouse. The infrastructure behind the market is part of what makes cross-border exchange possible.

The report also describes cooperatives organizing border residents and an online platform for checking supply and demand, ordering, grouping goods, logistics, domestic sale and settlement. It presents a shift from a simple passageway economy toward a more developed port economy. Those are the aims and administrative arrangements described in 2023, not a guarantee of the market's current operating scale.

Trade as a local system

For the report, the cooperative model addressed difficulties faced by individuals, including transaction costs and limited returns. It also records plans for processing imported goods locally. These measures show how a border market relies on rules, storage, inspection and coordination as well as buyers and sellers.

The cooperative model was presented as a response to high transaction costs and limited returns for individuals. The online platform linked supply-and-demand information to ordering, group purchases, logistics, domestic sales and settlement, while the report also recorded plans for local processing of imported goods.
