The name Wanyao brings bowls and kilns together. The village stands below Huagai Mountain, northwest of Huaning’s county town, and local accounts identify it as the place where the county’s pottery tradition developed. Here a ceramic object is connected not only with a maker but with a settlement whose history has been shaped by making.
The historic product was useful ware as well as something with a recognisable glaze. Clay preparation, wheel forming, glazing and firing required spaces for different kinds of work. Thinking through that sequence makes the village more intelligible: the finished pot was one point within a chain of materials, equipment and labour.
