Many names for a melon

Hami's own site publishes a long list of melon names, which is a better introduction than a single origin story.

The city already made a catalogue

The Hami government page for the fruit is mostly a list of names: Hongxincui, Heimeimao Mijigan, Xizhoumi No. 17 and No. 25, and many others. A list is more useful than a slogan. It shows that 'Hami melon' is a trade name sitting on top of varieties with different rinds, flesh and seasons. The page names them. Reading the list is not a tasting, and the names are not lined up by sweetness.

Fruit follows water

Hami is an oasis at the eastern end of Xinjiang, where roads continue toward Gansu. Melons here, like grapes in Turpan, are a cultivated answer to a dry basin. The national karez listing says the digging craft is also found in Hami, while naming Turpan as the representative place. Shared skill does not make the two basins the same town.

Leave the tribute tale for a sourced page

Popular tellings turn the melon into a gift for an emperor. That plot may belong in a later article if a specific text is quoted and dated. It is not needed to recognise the fruit. What a reader can use now is plainer: an eastern oasis, a municipal list of names, and a water craft shared with Turpan but centred there.
