Fuzhou Road runs roughly 1.5 kilometers through central Shanghai, from the Bund area toward Middle Xizang Road. By the early twentieth century, newspapers, publishers and bookshops had gathered here; the municipal history account records fourteen of Shanghai's thirty-one bookstores on the road in 1946. The concentration gave Fuzhou Road a reputation as a cultural and publishing street, where printed matter linked commerce with education and public debate.
That history survives in different kinds of retail rather than one preserved book quarter. Shanghai Book City, at 465 Fuzhou Road, presents books on a large vertical scale. A nearby red-brick building houses the Foreign Language Bookstore, whose official profile describes shelves spanning dozens of languages. These stores serve different kinds of readers and collections: one turns browsing into a multi-floor city of books, while the other organizes its offer around languages and subject areas.
