Lufeng Dinosaurs: From Fossil Finds to Public Display

A fossil is not a dinosaur story by itself. In Lufeng, the public record links field documentation, excavation and museum display.

A regional fossil record

A 2023 Lufeng government report describes a growing record of dinosaur discoveries: 417 fossil files had been assembled, 1,004 survey points completed and more than 120 relatively complete skeletons excavated. Citing specialist guidance, it counted 16 kinds then known from Lufeng. The figures belong to that report and date, rather than representing a final total.

These records connect fossils to find locations and field documentation. They also show why an excavation is more than the recovery of bones: recording where material was found preserves context that later study and display depend on.

From site to exhibition

The same report lists eight science venues and describes the large fossil-site hall at World Dinosaur Valley. Nearly 70 skeletons were on display there, alongside a bone bed rich in fossils. The hall makes the scale of the finds visible, while an assembled skeleton presents a studied reconstruction rather than a single animal discovered intact.

The account also mentions airport displays and popular dinosaur characters. Those forms bring Lufeng’s fossil identity into public space, but they serve different purposes from field records and museum specimens. The dated report captures how scientific documentation, exhibition and public imagery sit side by side in the city’s dinosaur story.
