Zhenyuan, Read from the Wuyang River
A river’s bends, crossings and steep banks explain the shape of this historic town.
Zhenyuan is easiest to understand by keeping the river in view. The Wuyang divides the old town into north and south sides, while lanes and former wharves connect the water to buildings on higher ground. Qinglong Cave is an architectural group built against a cliff, bringing Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian structures together. The result is a relationship between routes, river edge and rock face.
