From outside, a yike yin house gathers itself into a compact block. Its Chinese name means a single seal: the overall proportions recall the small, solid shape of an official stamp. Inside, the comparison gives way to a different experience. Rooms surround an open courtyard, bringing a patch of sky into the centre of the building.
Tonghai, in Yuxi, preserves examples of this regional house form. A municipal account connects the compact layout with the need to use land economically in the highland basin. Rooms can rise above one another, and even the shallow range facing the principal building may contain upper storage space. The house makes room both by gathering inward and by building upward.
