Dom Pedro V Theatre: A Stage Still in Use

A theatre built in 1860

Dom Pedro V Theatre began in 1860 under the name Pedro V Theatre. Macao’s first Western-style theatre in China opened here. It introduced a building organized around stage and audience, adding performance to the religious and civic institutions on St. Augustine’s Square.

The theatre was not only an architectural novelty. Nearby stood a church, seminary and library, so the square brought different forms of public culture into reach. The theatre offered an interior for performance, while its position connected it to the streets and daily movement of the city.

A room designed around an audience

The performance hall seats 276. Its audience seats curve like a shell, with a gallery shaped as a crescent above the ground floor. A foyer with an old crystal chandelier leads toward the hall, while side corridors offer room to pause between entrance and performance.

The building’s colors set it apart on the square: green walls, darker green windows and a red roof stand among neighboring façades with yellow tones. The present red diamond-patterned seat cushions follow a style used in the 1990s. A 2001 refurbishment changed the seats to green; in 2008 they were returned to red after historians consulted older material.

A stage within an ensemble

St. Augustine’s Square is compact, but its buildings span several kinds of cultural life. The theatre shares the setting with religious institutions and a library, while wave-pattern stone pavement gives the open space visual texture. The square is an urban room linking these doors.

A theatre still serving the performing arts remains part of civic life. Its historic character is not frozen by age; it continues to host performance in a preserved setting. That continuity makes Dom Pedro V more than an architecture specimen: it is a stage that has kept its social purpose.
