A church in Cizhong Village

Cizhong Church stands in Cizhong Village, Yanmeng Township, Deqin County, about 80 kilometres from the county seat, according to a 2024 heritage feature published by Shangri-La Online. The report dates its first construction to 1867 and a rebuilding to 1907. It describes the building as a Catholic diocesan church and records that a school and convent once operated there. These details place the church within a concrete local history rather than treating it as a free-floating symbol of Western architecture.

The same account says foreign missionaries left after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, religious activity paused for a time, and the church returned to congregational use in 1984.

A compound, not only a façade

The heritage feature names an annex, gate, cellar, missionary cemetery and vineyard alongside the main church. Together they form a compound associated with worship and other institutional activities. The report describes Western architectural forms combined with Han, Tibetan, Naxi and Bai influences.

A historic building can outlast the institution that first shaped it, but continued use and preservation are not automatic. The report says the church was listed as a Yunnan provincial heritage site in 1987 and as a national key cultural relic in 2006. Those designations brought public conservation responsibilities into the building’s later story, alongside the continuing religious life described in the local account.

Repair is part of the history

Deqin County’s 2023 cultural-relics report records that the main church repair project was completed that year. A 2024 departmental report says the project passed a four-party acceptance in January 2024 and a prefectural preliminary review in April. It separately notes that a proposal for restoring the church’s murals and painted decoration had been submitted for approval in May 2024. Structural repair and painted-surface conservation were therefore distinct projects with different timelines.
