Provincial materials identify Weishan with Nanzhao’s origins and document its historic town fabric. Its administrative name also identifies Yi and Hui communities. These are connected but distinct layers: an eighth-century polity cannot stand in for the lives of present residents.

Streets, museums and remembered history
Recent provincial reporting describes conservation and public-space projects in Weishan Old Town, including a Nanzhao cultural square and repaired historic buildings. These projects give the town’s historical memory a place in its present public spaces.
The county profile places the old town at the southern end of the Weishan basin and identifies it as the seat of the Yi and Hui Autonomous County. Its Ming-era grid survives in streets and lanes. Opened in 2015, the county’s Nanzhao Museum incorporates Dengjue Temple: a modern institution interpreting history within older architectural layers.
