In 215, Zhang Liao, Yue Jin and Li Dian commanded a garrison of more than seven thousand at Hefei when Sun Quan’s force besieged the city. Chen Shou’s biography of Zhang Liao records that he recruited eight hundred volunteers for an attack before the opposing forces had fully joined. The text describes a fierce engagement and Sun Quan’s eventual withdrawal. It is a campaign account about Hefei; the present park is a later place of remembrance, not a surviving map of every battlefield position.

From battle name to idiom
Zhang Liao’s name remains attached to Xiaoyaojin in local memory. Today, the Three Kingdoms Hefei History and Culture Hall stands beside Zhang Liao Pavilion inside Xiaoyaojin Park. Its exhibition uses digital media to retell the Battle of Xiaoyaojin, turning a historical account into a public interpretation visitors can encounter within the city.
A park renovated
The park’s history hall opened in September 2022, according to its operator, Luyang Culture and Tourism Development Group. The hall organizes its exhibits around the Jianghuai campaigns, Xiaoyaojin and Three Kingdoms Hefei, and recreates the battle through digital displays. The result is a meeting between an early medieval account and a modern museum experience, each shaped by its own way of telling history.
History in daily use
A battle story now shares the park with recreation and cultural programming. The history hall offers one focused interpretation; the wider park gives that account a setting within everyday urban space. Readers can distinguish the source layers: the Records of the Three Kingdoms narrates the campaign, while the contemporary hall presents it through exhibits and media.
