Waterfalls Across Nyingchi: From Kading Gorge to Motuo

Named waterfalls trace a route across Nyingchi’s valleys, from Kading Tianfo Falls near Bayi to Hanmi in Motuo and cascades beside the Zhamo Highway.

A waterfall list is also a map

A Nyingchi municipal profile names waterfalls across several places: Great Bend Falls near the Yarlung Tsangpo bend in Milin; Hanmi Falls in Baxing Township, Motuo; cascades along the Guxiang–Tongmai stretch in Bomi; Kading Tianfo Falls near Bayi; Jiaxing Gorge Falls in Gongbo’gyamda; and Oden Falls in Damu Township, Motuo. The names map a region of separate valleys, rather than a single waterfall route.

The profile also notes that some principal falls in the great canyon drop 30 to 50 metres. Around Nyingchi, cascades appear in different settings—from the great canyon to forested roads and tributary valleys. Their locations give each one a distinct place in the landscape.

Tianfo and Hanmi belong to different valleys

Kading Gorge, also called Gading, lies near Bayi beside the Nyang River system. A municipal page places it about 24 kilometres from the district seat, at roughly 2,980 metres, and describes a waterfall nearly 200 metres high. A 2024 tourism account calls Tianfo Falls the gorge’s main feature and notes that it may freeze in winter. Water descends through a setting of cliff, stream and forest, while the rock shapes invite visitors to see familiar forms in the stone.

Hanmi Falls lies in Baxing Township, Motuo, in a different county and river landscape. Nyingchi’s municipal profile names it among the region’s waterfalls. The contrast between Kading near Bayi and Hanmi in Motuo shows how the region’s cascades belong to separate valleys, each with its own terrain and seasonal character.

Water along the Zhamo road

The road from the Galongla Tunnel toward Beibeng descends through Motuo’s changing natural belts. A 2023 Nyingchi tourism guide describes streams and waterfalls along the route in summer; a later guide also marks a waterfall beside the Zhamo Highway. Water appears here as part of a journey through mountain forest, village corridors and lower valleys.

These roadside cascades sit alongside named falls such as Hanmi in Motuo and Tianfo at Kading Gorge near Bayi. The names trace a broad geography across Nyingchi: from the high descent at Galongla to the river valleys and forested roads below. Their settings change with elevation and season, giving each fall its own place in the region’s landscape.
