Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is home to several peoples whose histories meet across steep valleys and tributary rivers. The National Ethnic Affairs Commission’s Nu profile records different Nu self-designations: Nusu in Lushui, A-Nu in Fugong, A-Long in Gongshan and Ruorou in Lanping. It places Nu communities across several counties and describes them as living alongside Lisu, Dulong, Tibetan, Bai, Han and Naxi neighbors. Those details make clear that “Nu” is a broad national designation encompassing local names and distinct settings.
The same profile describes a particular linguistic closeness between Gongshan Nu speech and the Dulong language, noting that speakers can communicate. It also says the Nu varieties of Gongshan, Fugong and Lushui differ substantially from one another. This is a precise, situated observation—not proof that Nu and Dulong are one people. The overlap is meaningful because it records long contact and relationship, while the two names, communities and administrative identities remain distinct.
