Laomudeng is a Nu village in Pihe Township, Fugong County. Its church stands within a settlement whose families, fields and paths are part of the same mountain landscape. A 2021 academic study based on local historical materials and interviews traces several church buildings in Laomudeng before 1949, followed by disruption during political campaigns and the gradual return of religious activity in the late 1970s and 1980s. The history is not a simple importation of a European building form; it is a story of local believers deciding where to gather and how to rebuild.
In 1994, elder Elijah led the construction of a larger church. The study records that he set aside a piece of his household paddy land near an earlier site. The church was made of brick and wood, and believers used lime and sand in place of cement. Timber came from nearby forests, while blue bricks were salvaged from abandoned government buildings after the former Bijiang county seat was moved. The structure took shape from materials that carried their own local histories.
