A house can connect a city with a life without being that person’s birthplace. At No. 3 Beimen Street in Yuxi’s Hongta District stands the ancestral house associated with Nie Er, the composer of the music for March of the Volunteers, now China’s national anthem. The building places his family history within a particular street rather than within an abstract label of hometown.
The municipal account traces the house to Nie Liandeng, Nie Er’s great-grandfather, in the late Qing period, and records its later passage to his father. The family also lived and practised medicine in Kunming. Those addresses belong to different parts of the family story; a title such as ancestral house preserves the Yuxi connection without moving his birthplace or childhood wholesale into it.
