The Tea Table Facing the Fish Cages
Inside Xincun’s floating homes, a tea table faces the fish cages; families tend 42 nets, return to old boat homes and teach songs once carried by water work.
A traditional village across Haiying, Haiyan and Haiou in Xincun Town, where homes and fish cages float together in Lingshui’s lagoon.
The People’s Daily feature identifies the village as three water-based settlements—Haiying, Haiyan and Haiou—and records their 2019 entry on China’s fifth traditional-village list. A 2023 Hainan Daily report describes boat homes that can be reached from shore only by boat, and an interior arranged across levels: family room above, a tea platform facing the cages below, and a compact kitchen. Residents’ memories and routines show how the raft homes serve as both family spaces and working bases on the water.
