Wenchang Space Launch Site

A coastal launch complex whose orbit roles, fuel systems and wetland setting meet in one engineered landscape.

The National Space Administration describes Wenchang as China’s first coastal launch site, built to handle several classes of spacecraft. Construction began in 2009; the site entered operation and completed its first launch in 2016. The same account describes the complex as integrated with native coconut forest wetlands and as the country’s first launch site to use liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and aviation kerosene together. The place is therefore read through both its technical role and its environmental setting, as reported in 2024.
