Hongcun

A village where a stream feeds the central Moon Pond and a second pond to the south.

Hongcun’s water system makes the village plan readable on foot. UNESCO describes a stream at the foot of a hill that forms the central Moon Pond and another pool to the south; the channels connect daily settlement to a deliberately composed landscape. The curved pond is famous in photographs, but its story is larger than its reflection: it is one part of a village-scale water network.
