Cloth, Wood and an Island in a Museum
Hainan Museum connects material culture to island history, from Li textile heritage to prized woods and maritime life.
A provincial collection uses objects, including Li textiles and island materials, to frame Hainan’s history and maritime setting.
Hainan Museum opened in 2008 on Guoxing Avenue in Haikou’s Qiongshan District. Its permanent exhibitions range across the island’s geography, resources, history, customs, intangible heritage and maritime civilization. The museum also identifies Hainan huanghuali and agarwood as subjects of dedicated exhibitions. That breadth offers a way to connect a textile or carved material to the environments, skills and exchanges that made it meaningful. Its collections place the island’s materials and histories in conversation with the city around the museum.
