Dance in ordered lines

The National Ethnic Affairs Commission describes Munao as a major Jingpo festival and ceremonial gathering. Participants move in arranged lines to drum and gong rhythms, turning a shared ground into a collective choreography. The festival’s significance is also explained within Jingpo cosmology, including reverence for the deity Muda; these accounts belong to the community’s religious and cultural framework.

The festival's origins and ritual significance are explained within Jingpo cosmology, including reverence for the deity Muda. Those accounts belong to the community's religious and cultural framework; they are not simply decorative legend. The event has also developed public and civic dimensions, so a contemporary festival may include cultural performance, exhibitions and trade activities alongside dance.

More than a spectacle

The NEAC reference traces a different time layer: it records that Dehong designated Munao Zongge a traditional Jingpo festival in 1983, with public celebrations generally organized by local governments in the first lunar month. It describes people gathering from mountain settlements in festive dress for the large dance. A present-day celebration may also include performances, exhibitions and trade events, alongside the central collective movement.
