A street at the centre of Taipa

Guanye Street lies in the residential centre of Taipa’s old district. In 1983 it became Macau’s first pedestrian-only area. Removing through traffic changed the pace of the street: residents and visitors could move between shopfronts on foot, and businesses could open directly onto the public route.

The pedestrian zone helped draw souvenir and dessert shops to the street. Traditional pastries, local snacks and specialty foods became part of its commercial identity, while the close scale of the lane kept the experience tied to Taipa’s older neighbourhood rather than a large shopping complex.

An old market becomes a square

The street’s history also includes the old market, built in the nineteenth century. After the market moved, its site was redeveloped in 2003 as a small square where residents and visitors can rest. The street therefore links two kinds of public space: a pedestrian commercial route and a nearby place for sitting and pausing.

A weekly Taipa market organised by the government promotes local creative work and handmade objects. Alongside eateries, dessert shops and traditional food businesses, it adds another layer to how the street is used. Guanye Street’s identity has changed through several small shifts—the pedestrian zone, the migration of shops, and the market square—rather than through one sweeping redevelopment.
