Our Lady of Carmel Church stands on Carmel Square in Taipa. Built in 1885, it is one of the clearest landmarks of the island’s Portuguese Catholic history. The church predates Taipa’s five green houses by thirty-six years, placing it in an earlier phase of the settlement, before the 1921 residences gave the waterfront its present architectural grouping.
The church’s position is part of its story. From the square, the rise of the land brings the church above the older village and makes it visible across a compact neighbourhood. The square, church and nearby garden form a sequence of public spaces, while the water’s edge lies just beyond them.
