The Making of a Yunzi Go Stone

A Go stone is small enough to disappear between two fingers, yet making one involves carefully selected minerals, heat, timing and a controlled drop. The craft is recorded across both Kunming and Baoshan, with different local names retained.

A stone with a mineral beginning

The national intangible-heritage record groups the making of Yunnan Go stones under one project name: Yunzi and Yongzi. It places the practice in both Guandu District of Kunming and Longyang District of Baoshan. The two names should not erase that geography. A reader looking at a Kunming workshop is looking at one local practice within a broader Yunnan designation.

The record lists borax, quartz sand, agate, jade and other mineral materials among the inputs. It describes selection, crushing and grinding, weighing, high-temperature melting, hand dripping, annealing, polishing, washing, drying and sorting. It also states that the exact proportions are a core secret. That boundary matters: an account of process can explain the craft without pretending to reveal a protected formula.

Heat, a drop and a finished surface

The sequence moves from powders to a hot melt, then to a hand-controlled drop that forms the stone. Cooling and annealing follow, before the surface is polished and cleaned. Each stage changes what the eye and hand will later notice: shape, smoothness, translucence and the sound of a stone meeting the board. These sensory qualities can be described through the material and process, but they should not be turned into a claim that every workshop uses an identical formula or tool.

The record connects the craft’s history with older references to Yunnan Go stones and later changes in materials and technique. Such historical notes belong to the official project description; a full chronology would need historical texts and workshop archives. In a present-day workshop, the clearest story is often the relationship between inherited procedures and decisions made by craftspeople working now.

Craft beside play

The craft record includes both Yunzi and Yongzi and identifies a protected project and responsible institution. It does not make every product identical or settle which name a particular maker uses. Keeping the labels attached to their makers and places allows the small object to carry a precise story: not a mysterious formula, but skilled work at the meeting of mineral material, heat and play.
