The Dashanbao Black-Necked Crane National Nature Reserve lies in Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong, at elevations from 2,210 to 3,364 metres. A 2025 profile by the Yunnan forestry authority describes 5,958 hectares of alpine marsh-meadow wetland, about 31 percent of the reserve. It identifies the wetland ecosystem and black-necked cranes and their habitat as the reserve’s primary protection targets. The figures are institutional baseline information from that page, not a current winter census.
The reserve’s hydrological position gives the habitat a wider significance. The profile places Dashanbao wetland near the meeting of the Jinsha and Niulan rivers and identifies it as part of the upper Yangtze system and an important water source for nearby basins. This makes the cranes’ winter habitat inseparable from marsh, grassland and water management. The protected object is not simply a flock in a photograph; it is an ecological system where shallow wetland and surrounding land shape the places birds use.
