Chaohu is not a closed bowl set apart from the city. The environment ministry report names 37 inflowing rivers as restoration priorities, including Nanfei River and Shiwuli River. Water arrives through a network that carries both natural flow and the consequences of settlement. Thinking in terms of the watershed changes the scene from a scenic shoreline to a connected system with many upstream entry points.

Lake Chaohu: a watershed in the city’s daily work
Chaohu is connected to Hefei by inflowing rivers, wastewater systems and wetlands; the lake’s condition is shaped across the watershed.

Treatment upstream
A 2023 report lists 26 urban wastewater-treatment plants with a daily capacity of 3.25 million tonnes and says all 42 town-level plants around the lake had been built. These figures capture the watershed at that moment. They show why a lake story begins far from the water’s edge: pipes, treatment works and town infrastructure shape what reaches the lake.
Wetlands around the shore
Ten wetlands around Chaohu, covering nearly 100 square kilometres, were highlighted as part of the restoration effort. Wetlands are not decorative margins; they sit between rivers, settled land and open water. The ministry article links them to a broader programme of ecological restoration and monitoring. This provides a concrete way to understand how a large lake is tended through many smaller landscapes.
A measured improvement
The article reported Class III water quality for the first quarter of 2023, the best recorded since monitoring began in 1979. That statement has a time boundary and a monitoring context. It should be read as a result at that point, not a guarantee that the lake is “clean” in every place or season. Chaohu’s story is ongoing work: measure, trace sources, restore, and measure again.
