Under the Coconut Canopy: Groves, Soil and Geese
A field story about Wenchang’s working coconut landscape, from the scale of its groves to the measured life beneath young palms.
A working landscape measured in groves, orchard soils and vegetation growing beneath young palms.
A 2026 Hainan agriculture report attributes to Wenchang’s agriculture bureau a dated estimate of about 280,000 mu of coconut groves across 17 towns. The report names connected groves in Dongjiao and Huiwen, while research papers identify orchard plots at Moon Bay, the Coconut Research Institute and Wengtian, giving the landscape a dispersed footprint across the city. One experiment in a young plantation followed geese as they grazed under palms and compared vegetation at different distances from water. The site is best understood as a dispersed agricultural landscape whose scale, soil and understory all matter.
