Tunxi Old Street

A commercial street where shopfronts and the everyday business of an old town share one narrow route.

Tunxi Old Street is best approached as a street of exchange rather than as a row of façades. Its built character comes from shopfronts opening onto a pedestrian route, with upper floors and courtyards behind them. The street is a useful counterpoint to the villages: here Huizhou’s commercial life gathers into a linear public space, where the threshold between shop and lane is part of the architecture.
