Huizhou-style architecture

White walls, dark roofs, carved gables, and inward-facing courts shaped by climate and household life.

The familiar profile of Huizhou houses—whitewashed walls, dark tiled roofs, high gables, and a small open court—comes from a building tradition, not a single template. UNESCO notes the region’s restrained colours, carved gables, and furnished interiors. A skywell brings light and rain into an enclosed house; stepped fire walls rise above adjoining roofs. Their beauty is inseparable from practical questions of weather, dense settlement, privacy, and family life.
