A Hall Built After an Empty Schoolhouse
After seeing an old schoolhouse without students, Su Shi joined local companions in building Zaijiu Hall as a place for teaching and conversation.
A teaching and meeting place established in 1098, when Su Shi and local associates built a hall at Li Ziyun's home in Danzhou.
The National Reading Network places Dongpo Academy in Zhonghe Town and dates its beginning as Zaijiu Hall to 1098. A 2023 Learning Times article, hosted by Qinfeng, follows how the idea emerged after Su Shi visited an empty schoolhouse: he and military official Zhang Zhong met Li Ziyun, whose home had a pond, trees and a small book collection, and the group agreed to build a hall for teaching and conversation. It was renamed Dongpo Academy in 1548. Its beginnings are tied to a specific act of rebuilding learning in Danzhou after Su Shi’s arrival.
