Menglian Xuanfusi ceremonial music is not a generic soundtrack for a palace building. China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, summarizing an intangible-heritage safeguarding record, says the music and dance originated in Menglian and were performed in the period of tusi rule for receiving guests, festivals, market gatherings and weddings. It describes an ensemble form combining song, dance and instrumental music, often using group or unison playing.

The Ministry’s account connects this ensemble form to the Menglian Xuanfusi office and to occasions that organized public life: welcoming guests, festivals, market days and marriages. In 2021, Menglian County Cultural Center was named the safeguarding unit for the national intangible-heritage project. The institutional role belongs to the present record; the performance history reaches back to the former tusi administration.
