Lin Fong Temple was built in 1592 and became a stopping place for Guangdong officials visiting Macao. Its best-known visitor was Lin Zexu, the Qing commissioner who spent 3 September 1839 in the city. During his inspection of Macao, he stayed at the temple before going to A-Má Temple. The visit joined a neighbourhood temple to the formal business of imperial administration.

Lin Fong Temple’s role as a stop for officials and the 1839 visit of Lin Zexu are remembered at the nearby memorial museum.

A Visit in 1839
Temple and Memorial
A granite statue and the Lin Zexu Memorial Museum occupy the temple courtyard. The museum stands near the temple and commemorates the commissioner’s 1839 visit. Together, the temple and memorial bring two kinds of public memory into one compact site: a religious place that received officials and a museum devoted to a consequential chapter in Macao’s nineteenth-century history.
