When a poem is sung
The Zhangha heritage record offers another doorway into Dai narrative. It describes Zhangha as both a singer and a form of narrative song, performed solo or in dialogue, sometimes with the string instrument ding or the wind instrument bi. The record distinguishes improvisation, blessings or prayers, and long narratives with more fixed texts; melody follows the tones of the lyrics, and recitation can meet song. Zhangha shows how a story can travel through voice, accompaniment and occasion.
